University of Indianapolis’ Samantha Meissel (Terre Haute, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The sophomore forward averaged 20 points to lead the Greyhounds to victories over UW-Parkside and Saint Joseph’s.
In UIndy’s 73-58 win at GLVC East Division co-leader UW-Parkside on Thursday, Meissel scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed three rebounds and a steal. She was 4-for-7 (.571) from the field and hit 2-of-4 three-point attempts.
She returned on Saturday to guide UIndy to an 85-48 victory over visiting Saint Joseph’s. In the win, Meissel tied a GLVC record for single-game field goal percentage by going 10-for-10 from the field. It was the first time the feat had been accomplished in league play in over two years.
She finished the game with a game-high 25 points in just 19 minutes of action. She poured in 19 points in the first half and recorded 12 points in the first five minutes of action.
On the week, Meissel averaged 20 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. She was 14-for-17 (.824) from the field and 10-for-13 (.769) from the free throw line.
Meissel is ranked third in the GLVC in scoring (18.0 ppg) and field goal percentage (.539). She is also averaging 3.7 rebounds per game and is shooting 74.2 percent from the free throw line.
UIndy (19-5, 8-4 GLVC) snapped a two-game slide with the wins and is currently third in the GLVC East Division standings. The Greyhounds will next travel to second-ranked Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Lewis’ Jenny Turpel, Missouri S&T’s Tamara McCaskill, Missouri-St. Louis’ Lindsey Ransome, Quincy’s Jessica Keller and Southern Indiana’s Ellen Young.
