University of Indianapolis’ Megan Russell (Indianapolis, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week.
Russell, a junior designated player for the Greyhounds, helped her club split a pair of doubleheaders on the road in league action over the weekend.
For the week, she was 5-for-15 (.333) with four runs, eight RBIs and four home runs. Russell belted a home run in each of the Greyhounds’ four games and now sits just one shy of the school’s single-season mark of ten home runs with nine on the year.
Russell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run in UIndy’s 4-2 win at Lewis on Saturday. She followed up with a 1-for-4 effort in the Greyhounds’ 7-4 loss in the nightcap.
She returned to hammer two more home runs on Sunday at UW-Parkside, including the game-tying blast in UIndy’s 3-1 win in the series opener.
In addition, Russell picked up the win in each of UIndy’s two victories. She went the distance and allowed two earned runs and scattered five hits in the victory over Lewis on Saturday and then went all nine innings in the Greyhounds’ 3-1 win over UW-Parkside on Sunday. In the win over the Rangers, Russell allowed just five hits and no earned runs, while striking out nine.
On the year, Russell is hitting .342 with a league-best 24 RBIs, 12 runs and nine home runs. She is also 6-4 in the circle with a 1.39 ERA.
