Drury University’s Chandra Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. The senior helped lead the Panthers to a 4-0 record last week, including three wins in GLVC action.

 

Drury defeated Washington (Mo.) on Wednesday, 6-2, with Capozzi notching a win at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-7, 10-7. She also recorded a win at No. 1 doubles against the Division III-power with teammate Katia Bon, 8-4.

 

Capozzi posted two wins at No. 1 singles in league play on the week. She defeated Southern Indiana’s Reilly Ackerman, 6-1, 6-0, and topped Bellarmine’s Rebecca Porter, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5. Capozzi was also leading Kentucky Wesleyan’s Emily Harpe in Drury’s 5-0 win before the match was halted.

 

In doubles play, Capozzi and Bon teamed to record three wins in league action at No. 1 doubles. They defeated Southern Indiana’s Ackerman and Michelle Girgenti, 8-1, Kentucky Wesleyan’s Harpe and Maddy Bogle, 8-4, and Bellarmine’s Porter and Emily Roebker, 8-4.

 

Capozzi is 9-3 overall in singles play this season, including a 5-1 mark at No. 1 singles. She has also posted a 9-4 record at No. 1 doubles with Bon.

 

Drury (10-3) is ranked 31st nationally and third in the Midwest Region. The Panthers will face Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky and Northwood this weekend.

 

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Indianapolis’ Meghan Teunis, Lewis’ Bayley Brown, Missouri-St. Louis’ Pujitha Bandi, Northern Kentucky’s Michelle Schirmann and Southern Indiana’s Michelle Girgenti.
