Northern Kentucky University’s Michelle Schirmann (Cincinnati, Ohio) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. The junior helped the 34th-ranked Norse to a pair of league wins on the week and also captured a singles’ victory against Division I-foe Xavier.

Schirmann posted a pair of victories in Northern Kentucky’s 8-1 win over Indianapolis on Tuesday. She claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against UIndy’s Alena Perez-Majul and also teamed with Kristin Sunday to notch an 8-6 win over Lee Matthews and Meghan Teunis at No. 2 doubles.

In Northern Kentucky’s 6-1 loss to Xavier on Wednesday, Schirmann accounted for the team’s only point, securing a victory at No. 3 singles. She defeated the Musketeers’ Kelsey Kinnard, 6-3, 6-3. Schirmann lost her only match of the week to Xavier, falling at No. 2 doubles in a tiebreaker with teammate Kristin Sunday, 8-7 (7-5).

Schirmann returned on Friday to post a win at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles against opponents from Southern Indiana. In singles play, she defeated Gretchen Cantwell, 6-3, 7-5. Schirmann and Sunday defeated the Eagles’ Cantwell and Katie Jo Clagg in doubles, 8-1. Northern Kentucky defeated the Eagles, 9-0.

On the year, Schirmann is 11-9 in singles play, including a 6-2 mark in her last eight matches. She and Sunday are 15-6 in doubles competition this season.

Northern Kentucky (15-6) is 7-1 in the GLVC this season and alone in second-place in the league standings. The Norse will travel to Kentucky Wesleyan and Bellarmine this weekend.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Indianapolis’ Meghan Teunis and Rockhurst’s Kandice Belanger.
