University of Indianapolis’ Matt Smith (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Smith, a freshman for the Greyhounds, was perfect in four matches last week, helping UIndy notch a win in non-conference action over Saint Joseph’s.
In UIndy’s 8-1 win over Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday, Smith bested the Pumas’ Kris McNeary at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2. He also teamed with J.D. Greenlee to capture a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, over Saint Joseph’s team of Brandon Ward and Ishan Gohil.
Against Bellarmine on Sunday, Smith moved to No. 4 singles and topped the Knights’ Paul Clark in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. He and Greenlee also recorded a win at No. 1 doubles against Bellarmine’s Nic Janssen-Bernard and Nathan Matthews, 8-5.
On the week, Smith was 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles. He was 1-0 at No. 3 singles, 1-0 at No. 4 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles. The wins pushed Smith’s singles record to 11-6 this year and he and Greenlee have recorded a 14-5 doubles mark at No. 1 this season.
UIndy (13-10) finished the conference season with a 5-4 record and will next meet Bellarmine in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tennis Championships in St. Louis on Friday.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Lewis’ Tonis Irdoja, Missouri-St. Louis’ Andi Dimke and Rockhurst’s Ben Newell.
