INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University’s Nestor Hernandez, a senior from Berwyn, Ill., is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week. Hernandez, a forward for the Flyers, posted three goals on the weekend to lead Lewis to a pair of GLVC victories.
In Lewis’ 2-1 win at Saint Joseph’s on Friday, Hernandez broke a 1-1 tie in the 68th minute, scoring the game-winning goal on an assist from Justin VanderHeyden.
He returned on Sunday to post a pair of first-half goals, leading the Flyers to a 2-0 win over 22nd-ranked UW-Parkside. Hernandez scored the game-winning goal in the third minute of the contest, converting a rebound off of a Kipp Cartwright shot on goal. He added an insurance tally in the 41st minute on an assist from Charlie Bucio.
Hernandez has scored goals in six of the Flyers’ last seven matches and has a team-best 10 goals on the season. He has 22 points on the year and five game-winning goals.
Lewis (9-3-1), which extended its home unbeaten streak to 20 matches with the win over the Rangers, is 8-3-0 in the GLVC and alone in third place. The Flyers, winners of eight of their last nine matches, will travel to Truman State and Illinois-Springfield this week.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury’s Steve Wilczewski, Indianapolis’ Roger Lee, Maryville’s Kevin Aubuchon, Missouri S&T’s Andy Held, Northern Kentucky’s Braden Bishop, Rockhurst’s Haggai Leboo and Saint Joseph’s Greg Gehrig.
