Drury University’s Micah Whorton, a junior forward from Belton, Mo., is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. Whorton led his team to a pair of wins over the weekend and helped the Panthers clinch the top seed for the upcoming GLVC Tournament.
In Friday’s 2-1 win over Saint Joseph’s, Whorton scored the game-winning goal early in the second half. He also tallied an assist in the contest.
Whorton returned on Sunday to notch the game-winning goal in the 18th minute of play at UW-Parkside. In the 3-0 win over the Rangers, Whorton also assisted on Adam Peterson’s goal prior to intermission.
On the week, Whorton recorded two goals and two assists for six points. He posted six shots and three shots on goal. Both goals were game-winners for Drury.
Whorton has a team-best 13 goals and 11 assists this season for a total of 37 points. He has also posted five game-winning goals for the Panthers in 2009.
Drury (16-1) finished 13-1 in the GLVC to earn the league’s best record. The Panthers will host Missouri-St. Louis, the No. 8 seed, on Sunday in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Men’s Soccer Tournament.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Indianapolis’ Bobby Adkins, Lewis’ Jose Ibarra, Northern Kentucky’s Ryan Grothaus, Saint Joseph’s Bojan Adler and Southern Indiana’s Simon Rawnsley.
