University of Southern Indiana junior guard Ellen Young (Salem, Ind./Salem Community/SIU Carbondale) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Young paced the Eagles to a pair of league wins over the weekend, including a victory over 20th-ranked Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
 
In USI’s 89-63 win against visiting Bellarmine on Thursday night, Young poured in a career-high 24 points by finishing 8-for-9 (.889) from the field. She was a perfect 4-for-4 from the three-point line and hit all four free throw attempts in the victory. Young also pulled down a pair of rebounds and had three steals and an assist in helping the Eagles’ snap an eight-game losing streak to Bellarmine.
 
Young topped Thursday’s performance by again posting a career-high in scoring with 30 points in USI’s 85-76 win over Northern Kentucky. She was 9-for-14 (.643) from the field and hit 5-of-7 (.714) three-point attempts. Young also had three rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win.
 
On the week, Young averaged 27.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game. She shot 73.9 percent from the floor and 81.8 percent from the three-point line. Young was also 11-of-12 (.917) from the free throw line and helped USI extend its winning streak to eight games.
 
The Eagles (9-2) sit atop the GLVC East Division standings with a 2-0 record in league play. USI will next host North Alabama on Wednesday.
 
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury’s Lindsay Ballweg, Indianapolis’ Samantha Meissel, Kentucky Wesleyan’s Katie Behrens, Lewis’ Jenny Turpel, Quincy’s Janette Burgin and UW-Parkside’s Brittany Hogen.
