University of Indianapolis’ junior forward DeWann Squires (Indianapolis, Ind./Arlington/Lincoln Trail) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Squires averaged 29 points per game for the Greyhounds in their two wins last week.
In UIndy’s 110-83 win over Cincinnati Christian on Tuesday, Squires scored 45 points and became the first Greyhound to tally that many points in a contest since Division II Player of the Year David Logan accomplished the feat five seasons ago.
Squires connected on 19-of-24 attempts from the field to shoot nearly 80 percent (79.2) and missed just two shots (12-of-14) in the second half. He was 6-for-8 (.750) from the free throw line and also grabbed seven rebounds and had three steals, two blocked shots and an assist.
UIndy notched an 83-55 victory over Lake Erie on Saturday, avenging an early season loss to the visitors. In the win, Squires posted 13 points, five rebounds, an assist and steal. He shot 54.5 percent (6-11) from the field and helped UIndy secure its fifth win at home this season, equaling the Greyhounds’ total home wins from all of last year.
On the week, Squires averaged 29 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 1.0 blocked shots and 1.0 assists per game. He shot a blistering 71.4 percent from the field by connecting on 25 of his 35 attempts and was 7-for-10 (.700) from the free throw line.
Squires is averaging 16.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game this season. He is shooting 57.6 percent from the field and 80.6 percent from the free throw line. He ranks 12th in the league in both scoring and free throw percentage and 10th in field goal percentage.
UIndy (5-3) will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule against visiting Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday and Robert Morris on Dec. 29.
