University of Indianapolis senior guard Jessica Canary (Coatesville, Ind./South Putnam) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Canary paced the fourth-ranked Greyhounds to a pair of wins, including a victory over 12th-ranked and previously unbeaten Quincy on Saturday.

In UIndy’s 76-45 win over Christian Brothers on Wednesday, Canary posted 12 points and six rebounds. She was 4-for-10 (.400) from the field and 3-for-6 (.500) from the three-point line while also recording two assists and a blocked shot in the non-conference win.

She returned in Saturday’s 80-52 win over Quincy to register a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds. She also added four assists and two steals to help the Greyhounds extend their winning streak to 11 games.

Canary was 6-for-15 (.400) from the field and canned 3-of-7 (.429) three-point field goals in the victory. All three three-point field goals came in the final four minutes of the first half to help give the Greyhounds an insurmountable 16-point halftime lead.

On the week, Canary averaged 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She shot 40.0 percent from the field (10-25), 46.2 percent from the three-point line (6-13) and 83.0 percent from the free throw line (5-6).

This season, Canary is averaging 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. She ranks third in the league in assists per game, sixth in free throw percentage (84.8), fourth in three-point field goals made per game (2.36) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.87) and ninth in blocked shots per game (0.82).

UIndy (11-0) matched the program’s record for best start to a season with the win on Saturday, equaling the mark set by the 2007-08 team. The Greyhounds, who are 2-0 in GLVC action, will face Illinois-Springfield, Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis this week.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury’s Caitlin Shouse, Kentucky Wesleyan’s Amanda Harnist, Maryville’s Tori Tyner, Rockhurst’s Kate Carr and Southern Indiana’s Amie Newhart.
