Saint Joseph’s College senior forward Andrew Helmer (Highland, Ind./Highland)  is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Helmer led the Pumas to a pair of victories in league play last week.  
 
In Saint Joseph’s 76-68 win over visiting Indianapolis on Thursday, Helmer recorded his second straight double-double with a team-high 22 points and game-high 11 rebounds. He shot 58.3 percent from the field (7-12), 70 percent from the free throw line (7-10) and had five steals, four assists and two blocked shots.
 
Helmer returned on Saturday to lead the Pumas past Northern Kentucky, 57-56. In the win, Helmer scored a game-high 20 points and added five rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal. He shot 62.5 percent from the field (5-8) and 72.8 percent from the free throw line (8-11).
 
For the week, Helmer averaged 21 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists. 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots per game. He shot 60 percent from the field (12-20), 60 percent from the three-point line (3-5) and 71.4 percent from the free throw line (15-21).
 
Helmer is averaging 10.9 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game this season and is posting a team-best 12.8 points per game in conference contests.
 
The Pumas (13-7) have won five straight games and are currently in second place in the GLVC North Division with a 7-5 league mark. Saint Joseph’s will next visit Lewis and Quincy this weekend.
 
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury’s Dominique Long, Indianapolis’ Darius Adams, Kentucky Wesleyan’s Desmond Stephens, Missouri S&T’s Byron Bundy, Quincy’s Billy Baptist, Rockhurst’s Jake Meyer and Southern Indiana’s Jamar Smith.
