Northern Kentucky senior center David Palmer (Nashville, Tenn./Oak Hill Academy (Va.)) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Palmer recorded a pair of double-doubles in helping the Norse claim two league victories last week.
In Northern Kentucky’s 65-61 upset win over 14th-ranked Drury on Thursday, Palmer tallied game-highs of 16 points and 17 rebounds. He shot 50 percent from the field (5-10), 66.7 percent from the free throw line (6-9), collected five blocked shots and altered several other attempts.
Palmer returned on Saturday in Northern Kentucky’s 72-54 victory over visiting Missouri S&T to post 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. He was 11-for-16 (68.8) from the three throw line and also notched a blocked shot and steal.
On the week, Palmer averaged 16.5 points and 15.5 rebounds per game. He shot 42.1 percent from the field (8-19) and got to the free throw line 25 times, converting 17 (68%). Palmer also added six blocks and a steal in the two contests.
The two double-doubles brings Palmer’s season total to seven. He is averaging a team-best 17 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season. Palmer leads the league in rebounds per game, is eighth in scoring and is second in the GLVC in blocked shots per game (1.87).
The Norse (13-10) have won five of their last seven games and are tied for fourth place in the GLVC East Division with a 6-8 conference record. Northern Kentucky will next travel to Bellarmine and Kentucky on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Bellarmine’s Justin Benedetti, Lewis’ Marty Strus, Maryville’s Eric Gruenewald, Quincy’s Billy Baptist, Rockhurst’s Aaron Hill and Southern Indiana’s Jamar Smith.
