University of Southern Indiana junior guard Ellen Young (Salem, Ill./Salem Community/SIU) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Young helped the Eagles to three wins last week, including two key road wins in GLVC action.
In USI’s 74-66 come-from-behind victory over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday, Young posted a game-high 23 points and added five rebounds, three steals and two assists. She shot 63.6 percent from the field (7-11), and canned four-of-eight three-point attempts in the win.
The Eagles grabbed a 75-72 double-overtime victory at Northern Kentucky on Thursday with Young contributing 19 points. She posted nine of her team-high 19 points in the second overtime period to help USI secure a regular-season sweep of NKU for the first time since 1996-97.
Young capped the week with a 17-point, eight-rebound effort in USI’s 88-71 win at Bellarmine on Saturday. She shot 42.9 percent from the field (6-14) and also had two assists and a steal.
For the week, Young averaged 19.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She shot 43.9 percent (18-41) from the field, 43.5 percent from the three-point line (10-23) and 68.4 percent from the free throw line (13-19).
She is averaging 15.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on the season and ranks fifth in the league in GLVC contests by averaging 17 points per game.
USI (21-7, 12-5 GLVC) will close the regular season with a home contest against Quincy tonight. The Eagles will secure the East Division No. 2 seed and hosting rights for a first and quarterfinal round contest of the GLVC Tournament with a victory.
