University of Southern Indiana sophomore Diego Gimenez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.
On the week, Gimenez led the 40th-ranked Eagles to a 2-0 record in league play. He posted a 2-0 mark at No. 1 doubles and a 1-0 record at No. 1 singles.
In USI’s 8-1 win at Northern Kentucky on Friday, Gimenez topped Lance Koetter, the fifth-ranked singles player in the Midwest Region, at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3. In doubles action, Gimenez teamed with Joseph Boesing to defeat Koetter and Guillaume Berman at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (7-2).
Gimenez returned in USI’s 5-0 win at Saint Joseph’s on Saturday to record an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles with Boesing. The duo topped the Pumas’ Ishan Gohil and Miquel Belcina, 8-4.
On the season, Gimenez is 8-9 overall in singles play and 22-3 in doubles competition. Gimenez and Boesing are currently ranked first in the Midwest Region in doubles and 21st, nationally.
The Eagles (15-3) are 3-0 in the GLVC and will round out league competition when they host Lewis and Indianapolis this weekend.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Lewis’ Tonis Irdoja and Rockhurst’s Ben Newell.
