Missouri S&T junior midfielder Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. Young helped the Miners secure their first postseason appearance in school history as they claimed a pair of league victories over the weekend.
In Friday’s 3-0 win over visiting Saint Joseph’s, Young scored a pair of goals less than 30 seconds apart, including the game-winning tally.
Young notched the game-winner in the 70th minute on an assist from Colleen Lewis. She added an insurance goal seconds later in the 71st minute by converting a Morgan Lockowitz feed.
On Sunday, in Missouri S&T’s 1-0 win over visiting UIndy, Young scored the match’s only goal in the 24th minute on a cross from Kimberly Ekholm.
For the week, Young tallied six points on the three goals and had both game-winning tallies.
The goals for Young were the first of the season for the junior. She now ranks second for the Miners in points with nine on three goals and three assists.
Missouri S&T (8-6) secured the school’s first winning season since 2000 and finished sixth in the league standings with the 8-6 conference mark. The Miners will be the No. 6 seed for the GLVC Tournament and visit Quincy in a GLVC Tournament quarterfinal on Sunday at Noon CT.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Bellarmine’s Reyna Naranjo, Drury's Kelsy Long, Northern Kentucky’s Rachael Wood, Quincy’s Becky Fleming, Rockhurst’s Morgan Dahm and Southern Indiana’s Jessica Gates.
