University of Southern Indiana senior guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Ind./Clinton Prairie) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Newhart averaged 33.0 points per game to guide the Eagles in a pair of conference competitions last week.
In USI’s 85-68 win over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday, Newhart netted a game-high 27 points, including 19 points in the second half. She was 9-of-16 from the field, 5-of-8 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Newhart also added five assists and two rebounds.
In the Eagles’ 101-100 triple-overtime loss to visiting Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon, Newhart scored a career-high 39 points on 14-of-27 shooting. She was 5-of-9 from the three-point line, 6-of-6 from the free throw line and added three steals, three rebounds and an assist.
The 39 points was the most by a USI player since UIndy head coach LeAnn Freeland tallied 39 against IPFW during the 1996-97 season.
For the week, Newhart averaged 33.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. She shot 53.5 percent from the field, 58.8 percent from the three-point line and was perfect at the free throw line (10-10).
Newhart is averaging 13.6 points and a team-best 3.2 assists on the season.
USI (10-8) is tied for first in the GLVC East Division with a 6-4 conference record. The Eagles will next host Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside this weekend.
