Rockhurst University sophomore pitcher Mark Sappington (Peculiar, Mo./Raymore-Peculiar) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week.

Sappington threw six scoreless innings in Rockhurst’s 6-4 win at sixth-ranked Tampa on Saturday. He earned the decision by limiting Tampa to just six hits on the afternoon. He struck out six and turned a 6-0 lead over to Mark Himmelberg to finish the contest in the seventh.

The game was Sappington’s first on the year and he helped the Hawks earn a split in their season-opening doubleheader at Tampa.

Rockhurst (1-1) will face Findlay, Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State this week in Florida.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Indianapolis’ JaVaun West and Lewis’ Pat Lahey.
