Lewis University freshman Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Helwich helped the Flyers take three out of four games against No. 25 Indianapolis over weekend, earning a win in the first game of the series to set the pace.

After allowing two runs in a relief appearance against Saint Xavier on Thursday, Helwich went eight innings against the Greyhounds and did not allow an earned run in the Flyers’ 2-1 victory on Saturday. He scattered six hits and struck out 10 hitters, including the last batter he faced with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.

He finished the week with a 1-1 record and 2.00 earned run average. He struck out 11, allowed nine hits and walked four. This season, Helwich is 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA. He has recorded 26 strikeouts in 23.2 innings of work and has held opponents to a .244 batting average in his four appearances.

Lewis (13-8) is now 6-4 in the GLVC and will next host UW-Parkside on Wednesday before traveling to Saint Joseph’s for four games this weekend.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Quincy’s Matt Fishman, Rockhurst’s Mark Sappington, Saint Joseph’s Phil Trowbridge and Southern Indiana’s Josh Schultze.
