Rockhurst University senior Ben Newell (Topeka, Kan./Washburn Rural) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Newell guided the Hawks to a 3-0 record, including league wins over Quincy and Illinois-Springfield.

On Friday, Newell posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Quincy’s Rodrigo Marroquin at No. 1 singles to help the Hawks to a 9-0 dual match victory. He also teamed with twin brother Zach Newell to top Marroquin and Martin Selkeld at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

Newell picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Punsisi Darayatne of Illinois-Springfield on Saturday at No. 1 singles to pace the Hawks to a 9-0 victory. He and Zach also defeated Matt McGowan and Ben Main at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

On Sunday in Rockhurst’s 8-1 win over Truman State, Newell defeated Eric McCollough at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3. He and Zach won at No. 1 doubles over McCollough and Mark Sturley, 8-3.

On the week, Newell was 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. He has a 12-3 record at No. 1 singles this season and is ranked third in the Midwest region. The Newells are 13-3 at No. 1 doubles on the year and currently ranked second in the Midwest region.

Rockhurst (14-1) is 2-0 in the GLVC this season and will return to action against Washburn and Drury this week.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Indianapolis’ Trevor Cox, Lewis’ Lorenz Pestinger and Southern Indiana’s Juan Quiroz.
