University of Southern Indiana senior second baseman Amanda Brendel (Salem, Ill./Salem Community/Rend Lake) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week.
Brendel guided Southern Indiana to a 4-0 record last week as the Eagles swept UW-Parkside and Saint Joseph’s. In the four contests, she batted .500 with four runs, three RBIs, two doubles, a triple, a home run and one stolen base.
On Saturday, Brendel went 2-for-4 with two runs, a triple and an RBI in the Eagles’ 8-0 win over UW-Parkside in game one. She was 1-for-3 with a run scored and stolen base in the 4-3 nightcap victory.
In Southern Indiana’s 2-1 win in the first game against Saint Joseph’s on Sunday, Brendel went 3-for-3, scored the game-tying run in the fourth inning and hit the game-winning home run in the sixth inning. She belted a run-scoring double in the second game against the Pumas, a 6-2 Southern Indiana victory.
This season, Brendel is hitting .378 with eight doubles, five home runs and 16 RBIs. She has hit safely in 16 of her last 17 games and is hitting .462 with four home runs and 11 RBIs during that span.
Southern Indiana (17-15) is 8-8 in the GLVC this season and currently in seventh place in the league standings. The Eagles will travel to Oakland City, Illinois-Springfield and Lewis this weekend.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Illinois-Springfield’s Danielle Abbott, Indianapolis’ Kelsey Rummel, Lewis’ Michelle Vucsko, Northern Kentucky’s Emily Schwaeble and Rockhurst’s Natalie Johnson.
