University of Missouri-St. Louis freshman Louisa Werner (Dresden, Germany/Sportgymnasium Dresden) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week. Werner posted a 10-1 record in dual matches on the week, helping the Tritons to a 4-1 record.
She opened the week by picking up wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles guiding the Tritons to a 9-0 win over Lindenwood-Belleville. Werner defeated Lindsey Waters at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and teamed with Pujitha Bandi to collect a victory in doubles play over Jessica Moss and Cecelia Sanchez.
Werner posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Southern Indiana’s Michelle Girgenti on Wednesday in a non-conference match and also won with Bandi at No. 1 doubles over Girgenti and Lindsey White, 8-6. UMSL won the match, 5-4.
In UMSL’s 9-0 win over Illinois-Springfield on Friday, Werner won at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 7-1, over Moraes Druvinka and captured a point for the Tritons at No. 1 doubles by defeating Druvinka and Jane Brown, 8-3.
The Tritons topped Quincy on Saturday, 6-3, with Werner picking up a No. 1 singles victory over Lauren Henry, 6-0, 6-1. She and Bandi posted an 8-2 win over Henry and Michelle Bertelsman, 8-2.
Werner and Bandi also won at No. 1 doubles on Saturday in a 5-4 loss to Truman State. The duo picked up an 8-6 decision over Amy Ochs and Ellen Russell. Werner fell in her singles match to Kelsey Kuykendall, 6-3, 6-4.
This season, Werner is 13-7 overall in singles action, including a 9-5 record at No. 1 singles. She and Bandi are 11-2 overall at No. 1 doubles on the year.
UMSL (7-7) is currently 2-0 in the GLVC West Division standings. The Tritons will host Maryville, Rockhurst and Drury this week.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Indianapolis’ Meghan Teunis, Lewis’ Zsofia Kranczicki, Northern Kentucky’s Claire Spradlin, Quincy’s Pam Ganer and Rockhurst’s Maureen Rielley.
