University of Southern Indiana sophomore Juan Quiroz (Valencia, Venezuela/Pronoep Tecnocentro) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Quiroz paced the 36th-ranked Screaming Eagles to a 4-0 record last week, including wins over fellow GLVC members Missouri-St. Louis, Indianapolis and Lewis.
In Wednesday’s 7-2 win over Missouri-St. Louis, Quiroz recorded a win at No. 2 singles over Chetan Panditi, 6-0, 6-3, and teamed with junior Diego Gimenez to win at No. 2 doubles against Daniel Anthony and Andreas Hammar, 8-2.
On Friday, Quiroz defeated UIndy’s Nikou Christian, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and he and Gimenez topped Jeff Price and David Schoch at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, to lead the Eagles to an 8-1 decision over the Greyhounds.
Quiroz also collected a pair of match victories in a regional match with 41st-ranked Ferris State on Saturday. The Eagles won 8-1 and Quiroz won at No. 1 singles over Steven Roberts, 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 1 doubles over Roberts and Kyle Revall.
He completed the week by defeating Lewis’ Michael Wojnarowski at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2, on Sunday. He and Gimenez also won at No. 2 doubles over Wojnarowski and Lorenz Pestinger, 8-4, in a 7-2 USI victory.
On the week, Quiroz was 4-0 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Gimenez to go 4-0 in doubles play. He has posted a 16-5 overall singles record this season, including an 8-0 mark at No. 2 singles in dual match play. Quiroz has recorded a 13-6 doubles record this season with three different partners.
Southern Indiana (11-5) completed its GLVC schedule with a 4-1 record. The Eagles have clinched a spot in next week’s GLVC Tournament and currently sit in second place in the GLVC East Division standings. They will face Olivet Nazarene and DePauw in non-conference action on Saturday.
Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Indianapolis’ Trevor Cox, Lewis’ Uno Lapimaa, Missouri-St. Louis’ Andreas Hammar, Northern Kentucky’s Pierce Kohls, Quincy’s Rodrigo Marroquin and Rockhurst’s Rodolfo Gauto-Mariotti.
