A six-time GLVC Track & Field Champion in pole vault, Duane Chappell earned the honor three times at the indoor tournament (2001, 2002, 2004) and during three trips to the outdoor tournament (2001, 2002, 2003). Even more impressive was his six NCAA Division II National Championships in pole vault, earning the distinction indoors in 2001, 2002 and 2004 while outdoors in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Chappell also was an All-GLVC selection in indoor pole vault (2001-04), indoor 55-meter dash (2004) and outdoor pole vault (2001-03). His outdoor pole vault mark of 17'6 ¼" is a Lewis school record, and in 2014, Chappell was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Division II Hall of Fame. As a team, the Flyers tallied four-straight NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championship appearances (2001-04), finishing 15th in 2001, 23rd in 2002, tied for 15th in 2003 and tied for 14th in 2004; and three-straight GLVC Track & Field titles (2001, indoor/outdoor; 2002-03, indoor). Additionally, the indoor team finished in the Top 20 at the NCAA Championships twice (t-19th, 2003; t-13th, 2004).
