Ed Huneke served as head coach of the SIUE men’s soccer program during its stint in the GLVC from 1996-2007. His teams appeared in all 12 GLVC Championship Tournaments over that time, having won the event in 1997, 2002, 2004 and 2006. The three-time GLVC Coach of the Year (1997, 2001, 2003) led his team to the league’s best regular season record on five occasions, and put together a streak of 38 consecutive GLVC regular season wins from 2002-06. Under his watch, the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times, and were a national semifinalist in 2001 and 2005, as well as national runner-up in 2004. He mentored 14 All-Americans, 38 All-Region and 55 All-Conference honorees during the team’s tenure in the GLVC. Four Cougars also earned GLVC Player of the Year distinction in 1997, 2001, 2003, and 2005, in addition to his standouts garnering the 2006 GLVC Defensive Player of the Year and 2002 GLVC Freshman of the Year awards. During SIUE’s stint in the GLVC, Huneke recorded an overall record of 165-59-23 (.715) as well a 101-20-10 record (.809) in league play. He is SIUE’s all-time leader in wins with 251 in 22 seasons as head coach.
