Host Lewis Sweeps St. Joseph's in GLVC Volleyball Tourney

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Top-seed and host Lewis defeated No. 8 seed Saint Joseph’s in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 GLVC Volleyball Tournament on Friday night, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22. GLVC Player of the Year Stephanie Sagat led the way with 10 kills to help the Flyers to the semifinals on Saturday.
Lewis (29-3) will face Rockhurst in the second semifinal on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.a
Lewis claimed the first set by a 25-14 margin with Lauren Seliga guiding a quick-hitting Flyers squad recording five kills and four digs.
The Flyers kept the pressure on the Pumas in the second set and held off a strong mid-set push by the visitors. After building a five-point cushion, Saint Joseph’s pulled to within 18-17 on a Hannah Bedan kill. Lewis quickly retook the momentum and closed the set with a pair of Stephanie Sagat kills to take the 2-0 advantage.
Saint Joseph’s rallied in the third set and erased a 15-9 deficit to take a 22-19 lead. Lewis responded after trailing for the first time in the match by closing out the set and the contest on a 6-0 run. Kim Richards posted a pair of kills in the matches’ closing moments.
Sagat and Seliga, who finished with nine kills, each hit .381 during match. Rachel Ruedi added 33 assists and Ashlee Lindish posted 19 digs for the Flyers.
Saint Joseph’s (13-19) was paced by Maggie Walters who had seven kills and two blocks.
