USI Knocks Off UMSL in Quarters of GLVC Volleyball Tourney
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana women’s volleyball team pulled off an upset in the first match in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 GLVC Championship Tournament on Nov. 13 by defeating No. 3 seed Missouri-St. Louis, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19 and eliminating the Tritons from the tournament for the second straight year.
The win by the Eagles (18-13) places the No. 6 seed into Saturday’s semifinal round for the second consecutive year. USI will face the winner of Friday’s second match between No. 2 seed Indianapolis and No. 7 seed Drury.
USI controlled much of the match with the only stumble coming in the first set as UMSL (21-11) rallied from a 23-14 deficit in the first set. The 11-point run included three kills by both Liz Cook and Sarah Eisnaugle. Carolyn Holstein provided the service for 10 straight points and USI committed five attack errors in the set-deciding run.
USI rebounded in the match’s second set by a margin of 25-20. Melanie Pund had four kills and Brittani Oliver posted three to pace the Eagles and help the squad even the match at a set apiece.
The Eagles carried the momentum into the third set. Danielle LaGrange posted a pair of kills early in the set to give USI a 4-2 edge and never surrendered the lead. LaGrange finished the set with five kills.
USI put the match away midway through the fourth set with an 8-2 run as they rallied from a 13-9 deficit. LaGrange posted a kill, a block and a service ace in the run.
LaGrange finished with five blocks and Courtney Bealor helped pace the Eagles with 12 kills and 12 digs. Pund tallied 31 assists, six kills and eight blocks.
Eisnaugle led UMSL by posting 12 kills. Shelby Crawford added eight kills and 15 digs.
