Rockhurst Topples NKU in GLVC Volleyball Quarterfinals

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 5 seed Rockhurst upended No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 GLVC Volleyball Tournament Friday night, 25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 25-20. The Hawks (21-13) will now face the winner of Friday night’s match between top-seed Lewis and Saint Joseph’s.
Rockhurst opened the contest with four straight points, behind three blocks from Loretta McGovern and handled the Norse in the first set, 25-20. The Hawks never trailed in the set and with the score tied, the Hawks reeled off an 8-3 run to close the match.
The momentum for the Hawks was not slowed in the second set as they again jumped out to an early lead in route to a 25-15 decision. Emily Levy posted five kills in the set and Katy Hernandez added three kills.
The Norse (20-12) rebounded in the match’s third set defeating Rockhurst 25-15. In the set, Kim Nemcek set the pace by pounding out seven kills. She also added two blocks in the set as NKU erased an early Rockhurst lead with a 16-5 run.
Rockhurst put the match away early in the fourth set as they jumped on the Norse 16-9 and grinded out the win the rest of the way. Hernandez posted six kills and Maggie McGovern added five kills including four of the last six for the Hawks.
In the win, Rockhurst delivered a balanced attack as Levy and Hernandez each posted 11 kills and Maggie McGovern added 10 kills. Levy and Hernandez both hit .286 for the match and Levy added six blocks, while Loretta McGovern posted nine blocks.
NKU was led by Nemcek who notched a match-high 16 kills, 14 digs and six blocks. Noelle Peterson added 14 kills for the Norse and Kelly Morrissey added 11 kills with a .421 hitting percentage.
