UIndy Takes Down USI in GLVC Volleyball Semifinal

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis volleyball team held off a stingy Southern Indiana squad on Saturday night in the semifinals of the 2009 GLVC Volleyball Tournament, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-22. The ninth-ranked Greyhounds, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, advance to Sunday’s championship match at 1 p.m. following the win at Neil Carey Arena on the campus of Lewis University.
UIndy (34-1) will face the winner of the semifinal match between Lewis and Rockhurst and will be returning to the championship match for the first time since 2007.
The Greyhounds dropped the first set of the match to the sixth-seeded Eagles. USI (18-14) trailed by as many as six points in the first set and was behind 22-17 before reeling off eight straight points to claim the set, 25-22. Brittani Oliver and Danielle LaGrange combined to post six kills in the late-set run. Oliver and LaGrange each had seven kills in the impressive comeback.
UIndy quickly stole the momentum from the Eagles in the second set and cruised to a 25-14 decision. Courtney Anglemyer paced the Greyhounds in the key set by recording five kills.
The Greyhounds pulled out a tight third set, 25-23. In the set, Anglemyer recorded four kills and Kourtney Crawford added three. With the teams tied at 23-23, the Greyhounds sealed it with a Kristina Kerrigan kill and a ball handling error by USI’s Melanie Pund. Kerrigan finished the set with two kills and a block.
UIndy secured the match by holding off the resilient Eagles, 25-22, in the final set. Kerrigan had six kills and Callahan added five as the Greyhounds prevented the match from moving to five sets. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set, but UIndy quickly erased the lead with a 6-0 run. They never trailed again.
Kerrigan and Anglemyer each recorded a team-high 13 kills and Anglemyer posted an impressive .500 hitting percentage. The Greyhounds, who hit .258 for the match, were keyed by Cheneta Morrison who had 51 assists and nine digs.
Callahan posted a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs and Crawford and Hannah Kelzer added nine and ten kills, respectively.
LaGrange posted a match and league-high 27 kills to lead the Eagles attack. Oliver finished with 13 kills.
