Lewis Upsets Drury for NCAA Men's Soccer Regional Title
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Lewis men's soccer team upset second-ranked Drury, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the final of the 2009 NCAA Men's Soccer Midwest Regional held at Harrison Stadium. With the win, the 20th-ranked Flyers (15-3-2) advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals next weekend.
Lewis junior Mardoche Beya blasted home the Flyers' lone goal and game-winner from 30-yards out in the 51st minute. Beya, who collected his third goal of the season, was assisted on the score by Nestor Hernandez.
Sebastian Kieruzal, the Lewis goalkeeper, notched the shutout by posting five saves.
Hernandez was named the region's Most Outstanding Offensive Player, while Kieruzal claimed the region's Most Outstanding Defensive Player distinction.
Joining those two on the All-Region team were Lewis' Jose Ibarra and Zac Bond, Drury's Steve Wilczewski, Blake Wilson, Ben Taylor and Conner, Steven Beattie of Northern Kentucky and James Livingston of Ashland.
