UIndy Wins GLVC Volleyball Championship

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis women’s volleyball team knocked off top seed and host Lewis on Sunday afternoon to claim the 2009 Volleyball Championship, 22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-16. The championship was the first for the Greyhounds (35-1) since 2003 and hands ninth-ranked UIndy the GLVC automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
UIndy, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, hit .273 for the match and had three players with double-digit kills. The Greyhounds snapped Lewis’ 41-match home winning streak and ended the Flyers three-year run as league champions.
Lewis and UIndy traded punches in the first set until the Flyers were able to open a cushion midway through the set. Leading by three at 17-14, Lewis reeled off five straight points. In the set-deciding run, Colleen Mitros and Kim Richards each posted a kill and Ashlee Lindish gave the Flyers a 22-14 lead with a service ace. GLVC Player of the Year Stephanie Sagat posted four kills in the set and Richards added three kills.
UIndy came roaring back in the second set, opening with a 9-2 run. Kourtney Crawford and Cheneta Morrison each posted key kills in the run and Hannah Kelzer added a pair of blocks for the Greyhounds. UIndy added a late 6-0 run to lead by as much as 11 points in the set. Junior Lyndsay Callahan paced the Greyhounds with four kills in the set.
The Greyhounds carried the momentum into the third and fourth sets, closing out the match without a strong push from the Flyers. UIndy opened the third set on a 4-0 run and put together a 5-0 run in the set to lead by nine at 20-11. The Greyhounds forced the Flyers into nine attack errors in the third set.
The fourth set started much the same way as UIndy opened a 12-5 lead. Callahan had a pair of kills and Courtney Anglemyer had a kill and three blocks in the early run.
Kristina Kerrigan led the Greyhounds with a team-high 12 kills on the afternoon. Hannah Kelzer and Callahan posted 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Anglemyer proved to be a force at the net with nine kills and eight blocks.
Lewis was led by Sagat who finished with a match-high 14 kills.
