Lewis Men's Soccer Earns Trip to National Semifinal

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis men's soccer team defeated 14th-ranked Charleston (WV) in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals on Saturday, 4-1, and with the victory earned a trip to the National Semifinals. The Flyers (16-3-2) received the game-winning goal from senior Nestor Hernandez in the 72nd minute.
Charleston (19-4-0) jumped out on top early in the contest on a goal by Dion Peters in the seventh minute. He was assisted on the score by Mladen Petrovic.
Lewis knotted the score at 1-1 later in the half. Jose Ibarra scored the game-tying goal in the 29th minute on an assist by Kipp Cartwright. It was Ibarra's third goal of the season.
Hernadez' game-winning tally was his 14th goal of the season. He was assisted on the play by Mardoche Beya.
Cartwright added an insurance goal for the Flyers in the 80th minute. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by Charlie Bucio and Hernandez.
Bucio added a goal of his own in the 90th minute on a breakaway to complete the scoring on the afternoon. It was the sixth goal of the season for Bucio.
The Flyers outshot Charleston in the contest 24-15 and had 20 shots on goal.
Sebastian Kieruzal collected the win for Lewis in goal and made three saves. Charleston's goalkeeper Sean Teepen posted 16 saves in the match.
Lewis will next face either 10th-ranked Tampa or 9th-ranked Lees-McRae in the semifinals in Tampa, Florida on Dec. 3. Tampa and Lees-McRae will meet at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday evening.
