BOX SCORE
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Eleven different players had at least five points and five players reached double figures as the University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team trounced visiting Marygrove College, 101-40, Sunday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
It marks the first time that USI has reached the century mark since dropping 100 points on Oakland City University December 31, 2005. It is the Screaming Eagles highest point total since they scored 102 points against Calumet College of Saint Joseph’s November 21, 2004.
The Eagles (4-2), who racked up a season-best 28 assists, shot 54.4 percent from the field and 67.9 percent from the floor in the second period. They out-rebounded the Mustangs 50-30 and held a 52-12 edge in points in the paint.
Junior guard Ellen Young (Salem, Illinois) scored all 13 of her points in the second period as the Eagles raced out to a 51-18 halftime advantage. USI opened the game on a 21-4 run and used a 17-0 run later in the half to essentially wrap up the victory with just under five minutes to play in the opening period.
USI, which outscored Marygrove 22-1 throughout the first 12 minutes of the second half to extend its advantage to 54 points, did not allow the Mustangs (3-2) to record their 10th point until almost the four-minute mark of the first period.
Junior guard Cootie Leeberg (Lombard, Illinois) scored seven of her career-best 11 points in the second half to lead the Eagles. Senior forward Anaris Sickles (Harrodsburg, Kentucky) added six of her 10 points in the final 20 minutes.
Senior guard/forward Abby Williams (St. Joseph, Illinois) finished with 10 points, while sophomore forward/center Ashton Mertens (Morton, Illinois) came off the bench to score 10 points and grab a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard Amie Newhart (Mulberry, Indiana) finished with eight points and matched her career-best with eight assists before spending the final 12 minutes on the bench.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Lincoln Memorial University at the PAC.
