NKU Advances in GLVC Men's Soccer Championship Tourney
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Northern Kentucky and Lewis fought to a 0-0 tie on Friday evening in the semifinal round of the 2009 GLVC Men’s Soccer Tournament held at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. However, Northern Kentucky was able to advance to Sunday’s championship match by virtue of a 4-2 shootout win.
The Norse received eight saves by Michael Lavric in regulation and Lewis was also paced by their goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal, the 2009 GLVC Freshman of the Year, who notched 10 saves for the Flyers.
In the shootout, Northern Kentucky opened with a conversion by Braden Bishop who snuck the ball in the top right corner. Following a high miss by Lewis’ Jose Ibarra, the Norse took a 2-0 advantage in the shootout following a conversion by Alex Oeswein.
Lewis’ Mardoche Beya missed high, but Kieruzal kept the Flyers close by stopping an attempt by the Norse’s Steven Beattie.
Lewis followed with a conversion by Robert McGowan to pull it to 2-1. Northern Kentucky’s answered with a goal by Chris Dobrowolski and following a conversion by Lewis’ Jose Lopez, Northern Kentucky sealed the shootout win with a goal by Stephen McGill.
The double overtime contest will officially count as a tie, but Northern Kentucky earns the right with the shootout victory to face the winner of the Drury-Bellarmine match in the championship on Sunday.
