HONOLULU, Hawaii - Caitlin Shouse scored 15 points to lead six Lady Panthers in double figures as Drury cruised past Chaminade 98-49 in the first round of the Hoop N' Surf Classic Wednesday night at the Kilauea Recreation Center.
Shouse was (7 of 7) and scored nine points in the second half. Freshman Sara Jane Plemmons scored a career high 14 with Katie Pritchard also scoring 14. Melanie Oliver added 13, Ja'Nell Jones 12 and Lindsay Ballweg 10. Drury improved to 8-3 and Chaminade fell to 1-3.
"We had a very good low post performance in this game and it helped us to get some easy buckets and not rely so much on the three, Drury coach Steve Harold said. "Sara Jane played extremely well and picked and choosed her battles. She played her best game of the season tonight."
The Lady Panthers shot a blazing 73% (22 of 30) in the first half and forced 18 turnovers, in running out to a 53-18 halftime lead over the Silverswords.
"In the first half our defense triggered alot of our offense," Harold said.
Drury continued the dominance in the second half with a 19-3 run in the first six minutes to lead 72-21. The Lady Panthers outscored Chaminade 45-31 in the second half. Drury shot 61% (39 of 64) and 50% (10 of 20) from 3-point range. The Silverswords shot 41% (17 of 42). The Lady Panthers dominated the boards with a 39-17 advantage led by Oliver's seven. Drury matched a season high with 25 forced turnovers.
The Lady Panthers will close the Hoop N' Surf Classic by taking on Hawaii Pacific at 5 p.m. Friday.
