RENSSELAER, Ind. - The Saint Joseph's College men's basketball team defeated Indiana University-Northwest 124-47 on Thursday night at Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse. SJC displayed accurate shooting as they broke three school records in the process.
The Pumas (5-3) scored the game's first 11 points, five of which game from Andrew Helmer (Sr., Highland, Ind./Highland). The Red Hawks (3-9) did not convert a field goal until the 15:27 mark of the first half. SJC continually rotated players onto the floor as the personnel built a 63-20 lead at halftime. Jesse Repay (RSo., Portage, Ind./Quincy) played the final five minutes of the first half, converting on all three of his three-point attempts to finish the with nine first half points.
The hot shooting continued in the second half as the starters were pulled within the first two minutes of the second half. SJC converted on 56 percent of their attempts from the field and set a new school record for most three-point baskets made in a game by converting on 18 of 35. The previous mark was 15 three-point baskets in a game was set against Indianapolis in December of 2003. The 35 three-point attempts also broke a record set in February in 2008, when SJC attempted 33 three-pointers in Indianapolis
The 77 point differential broke a 23 year old record for margin of victory. The Pumas defeated Indiana University-South Bend 118-53 in February of 1986.
The short-handed and undersized Red Hawks were out rebounded 56-26 on the night. Adam White finished with a game-high 26 points for the Red Hawks while Nick Panousis added 11 points.
Jesse Repay finished with a team-high 17 points to lead the Pumas. Michael Lipton (Fr., Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) completed an all around performance with 13 points, four assists, four steals, and two blocks.
All together, SJC finished with six players reaching double figures with Marcus Jackson (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) and Christian Um Kaman (So., Bowie, Md./Beaver CC) each recording 11 points. The duo also pulled in eight rebounds each. Michael Horton (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) scored 10 points in 12 minutes while Jade Anthrop (So., West Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic) added 10 points by converting on four of his five attempts from the field.
The Pumas will travel to Lakeland, Florida on Monday to the play in the Holiday Inn/Ledger Classic hosted on the campus of Florida Southern College. SJC will play the University of Missouri- Saint Louis in the tournament's second game Monday night.
