SJC's Somogyi, UIndy's Russell Earn Weekly Softball Honors

INDIANAPOLIS – Saint Joseph’s College’s Sara Somogyi (Chicago, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week and University of Indianapolis’ Megan Russell (Indianapolis, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week.

 

Somogyi, a senior pitcher for the Pumas, led her club to a 5-1 record last week by collecting four wins in the circle. On the week, Somogyi posted a 4-1 record with one save and did not allow a single earned run. She struck out 35 in six appearances and logged 30 innings during the week.

 

She picked up both wins in Saint Joseph’s sweep of Robert Morris on Tuesday, including a four-hit shutout in the day’s first game. She struck out seven in the first game, a 2-0 Pumas’ win, and allowed just one hit in three and one-third innings in the night cap, a 4-0 Saint Joseph’s victory.

 

On Thursday, Somogyi recorded her second of three shutouts on the week in a 9-0, five-inning decision over Goshen. She struck out nine and allowed just three hits. In the nightcap against Goshen, Somogyi notched a save by registering the final two outs of an 8-7 victory.

 

She pitched all 14 innings in Saint Joseph’s doubleheader split against Bellarmine on Saturday. Somogyi took the loss in game one, 3-0, despite allowing just three hits and striking out ten. She followed that effort with a five-hit complete game shutout in the nightcap. She struck out six in the 3-0 win.

 

On the year, Somogyi is 14-4 with a 1.74 ERA. She has struck out 151 batters in 121 innings this season.

 

Saint Joseph’s (17-11) is 6-4 in the GLVC and in fifth-place in the league standings.  The Pumas will face Huntington and Quincy this week.

 

Russell, a junior designated player for the Greyhounds, hit .636 on the week to help her team to a four-game sweep in conference play.

 

On Saturday, Russell went 4-for-6 in a doubleheader sweep of Northern Kentucky. In the first game, she was 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. She then returned to go 3-for-3 at the plate in UIndy’s 6-1 win in game two. She drove in one run and scored another.

 

Russell returned on Sunday to deliver a 3-for-3 performance in the Greyhounds’ 11-0 win over Bellarmine. She belted two home runs and posted three RBIs and three runs. The two home runs brought her season total to 11, breaking the previous UIndy single-season home run mark (10) in just the 27th game of the year.

 

On the week, Russell was 7-for-11 (.636) with five RBIs, five runs, two home runs and a double. She is leading the Greyhounds in most offensive categories, including batting average (.379), slugging percentage (.816), home runs (11) and RBIs (29) this season.

 

UIndy (17-11) moved into first-place in the GLVC standings with the wins. The Greyhounds are 9-3 in league play and will visit Urbana and Quincy this week.

 

Other top performers in GLVC last week included Bellarmine’s Lewis’ Carissa Castonzo and Saint Joseph’s Brittnie Boerema.
