Quincy's Bunzell, Wentland Land GLVC Weekly Softball Honors
INDIANAPOLIS – Quincy University’s Torie Bunzell (Utica, Ill.) and Jasmyn Wentland (Willowbrook, Ill.) are the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.
Bunzell, a sophomore pitcher for the Lady Hawks, collected five of her team’s six wins last week. She helped her club to the 5-1 week by pitching all but two of the 42 innings in the contests and she recorded a pair of no-hitters.
On the week, she was 5-1 with a 0.88 ERA. She struck out 65 batters and allowed just five earned runs and 16 hits in 40 innings.
She picked up both wins in the Lady Hawks’ sweep of Drury on Monday. She tossed a four-hit shutout in the first game and went five scoreless innings in the second game, a 5-3 Quincy victory.
In Quincy’s sweep of Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, Bunzell again recorded both victories. She tossed a no-hit shutout in the opener, a 2-0 Quincy win, and struck out 16 batters. Bunzell returned in the nightcap and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in Quincy’s 5-3 win. She allowed just two hits and struck out 13.
Bunzell also threw a no-hitter in the Lady Hawks’ 4-1 win over UIndy on Sunday. She allowed one run and struck out 13. In the second game against the Hounds, Bunzell took the loss in a 3-2 decision, despite striking out 10.
This season, Bunzell is 14-8 with a 1.49 ERA. She has recorded 229 strikeouts in 149 innings and has posted six shutouts and 20 complete games in 22 appearances.
Wentland, a senior catcher for Quincy, was a key to the Lady Hawks’ success last week. She batted .600 (12-20) with four RBIs, six runs, two home runs, two doubles and a triple.
She was 4-for-8 in the Lady Hawks’ sweep of Drury on Monday. Wentland was 3-for-4 in the first game of the series with two runs, a double and a triple.
She returned in the Lady Hawks’ doubleheader sweep of Saint Joseph’s on Saturday to go 5-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs, two runs and a pair of home runs. She belted a walk-off home run in Quincy’s 2-0 win over the Pumas in the first game and was 3-for-3 with a solo home run in Quincy’s 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Wentland capped the week with a 3-for-6 effort in the two games with UIndy. In Quincy’ 4-1 win over the Hounds, Wentland was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.
This season, Wentland is batting .343 with 16 RBIs and 15 runs scored. She has a team-best seven home runs to go along with four double and a triple this year.
Quincy (17-19) is tied for first-place in the GLVC standings at 8-2. The Lady Hawks will visit Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan this weekend.
