BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lewis women's soccer team tied Ferris State 2-2 in a non-conference road game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Flyers got on the board first thanks to junior Kelsey Muruato (Lombard, Ill./College of DuPage). She took a pass from sophomore Allison Schieffer (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) and scored on a breakaway from 15 yards out at 7:14.
Freshman Aly Lansky (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) made it 2-0 on a goal assisted by senior Erin Beddows (Ada, Mich./Lowell) two minutes before halftime.
"Our urgency and intensity was much better," head coach Chris Koenig said. "We got the effort we were looking for and found some success."
Lewis faced a set back less than ten minutes into the second half when senior Jessica McNamara (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) was dealt a red card. The foul meant the Flyers were down a player for the rest of the contest.
The Bulldogs made it a one goal game with a score at 64:01 on a penalty kick by Bri Borgman. Just over three minutes later Sam Zerilli took a pass from Megan McCabe and headed in the equalizer.
Ferris State's run had the Flyers on their heels however Lewis was able to regroup and prevent the Bulldogs from taking the lead.
"I think we did a fantastic job of organizing after we lost Jessica," Koenig said. "I'm frustrated because I think it's a game we should have won, however I'll take the tie when playing a man down on the road."
Ferris State is now 0-2-1. Lewis is 1-1-1. The Flyers are off until Sunday when they travel to Springfield, Mo. and open conference play against Drury at noon.
