QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2009 season with a 2-0 win over Lindenwood University in opening day action of Soccer Bowl XVI. Quincy netted two second half goals over the Lions, using long passes to start each score, and improve to 1-1 on the season.
The two teams felt each other out in the first half with not much action going on. Lindenwood led in shots 4-1 in the half as the two teams went into halftime with no score. Quincy played much faster in the second half and needed little time to record their first goal of the season.
Jayme Groark sent the ball deep down the middle of the field to Jack Wedemeier to start the play. Wedemeier then raced past the Lion defender and slipped the ball past the Lion keeper to put Quincy up 1-0 just 44-seconds into the second half. Another long pass helped set up the Hawks' second goal as well with Jake Pittroff playing a ball down the left sideline for Wedemeier. Wedemeier then cut towards the middle and fed an open Corey Eatherton who buried the shot to give Quincy a 2-0 lead.
The two teams fought hard down the stretch but Quincy's defense stayed tough, limiting Lindenwood to just three shots in the second-half. Quincy keeper Kyle Dillman made three saves in the game, recording the shutout. Quincy is now 1-1 on the season and will conclude play in Soccer Bowl XVI tomorrow evening with a game against Truman State University at 7:30 p.m. In the night's other game on Truman State defeated Christian Brothers University 4-0.
