QUINCY, Ill. - Monday's match was a tale of two teams for the Quincy University women's volleyball team but in the end they were good enough to snap a three match losing streak and pick up a 3-2 win over visiting Missouri Baptist University.
Quincy and Missouri Baptist split the first four sets of the match with Missouri Baptist winning game one 25-20 and game three 25-23. Quincy took game two 25-22 and game four 25-13 before rallying in the fifth set to win 15-13. Quincy hit just .156 and .042 in their two set losses but hit .184, .188 and .091 in their three wins.
Quincy jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the fifth set but saw Missouri Baptist climb back into the game and eventually take a 13-12 lead of their own. An attack error gave Quincy the serve and the Lady Hawks picked up a block from Briann Joslin to take the lead and won the game on an attack error by the Spartans.
Quincy had to recover from a sloppy first game and did so in the second set, jumping out to a 15-11 lead when Courtney Young had three consecutive service aces. The Lady Hawks withstood a late charge in the set and evened the match at 1-1. After holding a 22-21 lead in the third set the Lady Hawks were out scored 4-1 as Missouri Baptist took a two sets to one lead. Quincy's attack was on a roll in the fourth set, jumping out to a 17-10 lead and finishing off the Spartans for the win.
Joslin led all players with 21 kills while Lyndsay Kooi finished with 32 assists and Lauren Ketchum added 17 digs. The Lady Hawks finished the game hitting .128 as a team with 55 kills and 33 errors and added 11 total team blocks, including seven block assists by Joslin.
Quincy improves to 6-17 overall this season and returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference action this Friday when they host Bellarmine University at 7 p.m. in Pepsi Arena.
