HILLSDALE, Mich.- The UIndy volleyball team fell just short of its second come-from-behind win in as many days, as the No. 19 Greyhounds (27-9) fell in five sets to 12th-ranked Grand Valley State (26-6) Sunday in the finals of the 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional.
The Lakers won by scores of 15-25, 26-24, 25-16, 23-25 and 15-9. The Midwest Regional was held at Jesse Phillips Arena on the campus of Hillsdale College.
The Greyhounds used a pair of quick 3-0 runs to take control early in the first set. UIndy’s fast offense continued to out-pace the second-seeded Lakers throughout the opening frame. The Hounds later managed a 9-1 rally that upped the lead to double-digits and earned a 25-15 win, as sophomore Kourtney Crawford notched six points and six digs in the set.
In contrast to the first, the second set was a much closer affair, featuring whopping 15 ties. The Lakers ran off four straight to take a 20-18 edge, but after a timeout, the Greyhounds regrouped to score five of the next six.
GVSU would not concede, however, rebounding to earn set point at 24-23. The teams traded points until the Lakers got over the hump with a 26-24 set win, capped by a service ace by sophomore Olivia Kohler.
The third set was all Grand Valley through the early going, as the Lakers scored 10 points before the Greyhounds got on the board. The scoring was virtually even from that point, but the damage was done, as GVSU would eventually take the set 25-17 and earn a 2-1 edge overall.
Looking for its second straight come-from-behind victory, Indianapolis counterpunched with a 6-0 scoring run early in the fourth, but the Lakers were able to bounce back to tie it at eight apiece.
The fourth-seeded Greyhounds surged again to go in front 19-12 and shook off a late charge by the Lakers to earn the 25-23 win. On the second set point of the frame, Courtney Anglemyer terminated the stanza with a solo block.
After the Hounds dispatched of top-seeded Hillsdale in five yesterday, the stage was set for another thriller fifth set.
The Lakers earned the early edge by building a 5-1 cushion in the race to 15. Three straight points from UIndy got the Greyhounds back in it, but GVSU answered with a 4-0 run while going on the score 10 of last 15 points to take its first regional crown since 2008 and eighth since 2000.
Crawford and Kristina Hefferan led the Greyhounds with 14 kills each. Kristina Kerrigan and Cheneta Morrison both recorded double-doubles, and Lyndsay Callahan registered 18 digs.
Indianapolis placed three on the all-tournament team, as Callahan, Hefferan and Morrison were named to the 12-player all-star squad.
Wearing a Greyhound uniform for the final time were seniors Callahan and Morrison. The duo finished their career as part of the winningest class in program history, combining for a four-year record of 127-25 (.836). Both are members of the exclusive 1000-kill/1000-dig club, as just five Greyhounds have attained both career milestones.
A four-time all-conference honoree, Callahan finished her tenure second in the UIndy annals in career digs (1,933) and fifth in career kills (1,214). Morrison is also in the top 10 in both categories and was named the program’s first AVCA First Team All-America honoree in 2009.
Notes: UIndy’s 2010 NCAA appearance marked its fourth postseason berth in as many seasons. The Greyhounds advanced to at least the regional semifinal each year, while going on to make its first-ever Elite Eight in 2009…UIndy was one of only three teams among the 16 regional finalists to face a ranked squad in each of the first three rounds.
