SOMERS, Wis. - The University of Southern Indiana men's cross country team won its sixth straight GLVC Championship on Saturday monring by capturing 2010 title at the Wayne E. Dennahl National Cross Country Course. The Eagles posted a team score of 36 to out-pace second-place Drury in the standings.
The Eagles were led by a trio of runners earning top-five individual finishes. Junior Dustin Emerick placed second on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 24:50. Junior Brendan Devine finished just behind in third place with a time of 24:54 and Andrew Dixon was fifth in 24:58.
Drury's Jaime Villa Zapatero won the individual title to lead the Panthers at the meet. Zapatero notched his third consecutive individual crown by completing the course in 24:41. He becomes just the third GLVC runner to win at least three GLVC Championships joining Ashland's Darius Janczewski (3) and Southern Indiana's James Nolan, who won four titles. Zapatero is also the 12th GLVC runner to finish in the top ten four times.
Southern Indiana's Mike Hillyard was named the GLVC Coach of the Year and Zapatero earned GLVC Runner of the Year honors.
The GLVC Freshman of the Year was awarded to Lewis' Andrew McClain who finished in ninth place.
