SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Oakland City had a 19-4 run to open the second half which propelled the Mighty Oaks to an 83-71 victory over UIS in a non-conference women’s basketball game at TRAC on Monday.

The win moved Oakland City to 7-12 while UIS dropped to 2-19.

The Prairie Stars were led by Kelly Thompson’s game-high 21 points (including going 6-for-9 from three-point range) while Susan Coryell had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. She also added six steals. Alex Blair and Rachael Follmer each had 10 points.

Oakland City got 18 points from Lenzie Kerchief and 15 teach from Samantha Stahl and Kristi McVey. McVey finished the game 12-for-14 from the free throw line.

Oakland City led for nearly the entire first half after Kerchief hit a jumper to give them a 4-2 lead just 1:09 into the contest but UIS hung tough after falling behind by as much as eight points but used a 10-0 run to take a 31-29 lead with 2:08 to play. The Mighty Oaks took the halftime lead at 33-31 on a lay-up by Stahl with just over a minute to play.

The early part of the second half proved to be the difference in the game as Oakland City opened the period with a 19-4 run over the first 6:47 to get the lead to 17 at 52-35.

The Prairie Stars then chipped away and were able to get within three at 75-72 with 1:01 to play but could get no closer.

UIS returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday when it travels to Quincy. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
