EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Michigan Tech University senior forward Katie Wysocky (Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin) was named the Daktronics, Inc. Midwest Region Player of the Year in a vote of the region’s sports information directors. She was joined on the First Team by four GLVC standouts.
Wysocky was second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a team-high 17.6 points per game and led the GLIAC with 11.7 rebounds per appearance. The GLIAC Player of the Year led the Huskies to the GLIAC regular season and tournament titles and enters this weekend’s NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament as the program’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder.
This marks the second consecutive year that Wysocky has been named to the Daktronics All-Midwest Region first team. She went on to earn All-America honors in 2009.
Other first team All-Midwest Region performers included University of Indianapolis junior forward Samantha Meissel (Terre Haute, Indiana) and senior guard Jessica Canary (Coatesville, Indiana); Drury University senior guard/forward Lindsay Ballweg (Shawnee, Kansas); and Lewis University junior forward Jenny Turpel (Haslett, Michigan).
Meissel and Canary led the Greyhounds to the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title and the number two seed in this weekend’s regional tournament. Meissel averaged a GLVC-best 19.6 points to go along with 5.1 rebounds per game and was named the GLVC Player of the Year. Canary chipped in 14.3 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Greyhounds, who won their first 24 games this season.
Ballweg averaged 18.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game and led Drury to the GLVC Tournament title last weekend. The first-team All-Conference honoree earned GLVC Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors and has the Panthers entering this weekend’s regional tournament as the third seed.
Turpel was one of the GLVC’s most dominate post players as she averaged 17.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest, leading the Lewis Flyers to the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament.
The Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region second team is comprised of Tiffin University’s Mandy Jaeb (Louisville, Ohio), Northern Kentucky University’s Casse Mogan (Circleville, Ohio), Northwood University’s Jodi Ostergren (Midland, Michigan), Michigan Tech’s Sarah Stream (Ishpeming, Michigan), and Grand Valley State University’s Emma Veach (Grand Haven, Michigan).
The NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament begins Friday at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton, Michigan.
