UIndy Opens GLVC Play with Win over USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The UIndy baseball squad opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 12-10 win at Southern Indiana Friday night. The win upped the Greyhounds’ record over .500, setting it at 7-6.
The Greyhounds tallied six runs in the second inning, all with two outs. UIndy started the frame with back-to-back strikeouts, but followed that with four hits, a hit by pitch and a walk to hang a half dozen on the board. Junior Colby Shaw (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) picked up an RBI single while freshman Zach Kreegar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) had a two-run double.
The Screaming Eagles came right back with a four-run answer in the bottom of the second, however. USI kept the pressure on with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 9-6 lead.
UIndy responded with a three-run, yet hitless sixth inning to tie it, followed by a two-run output in the seventh to take the lead for good.
With two on and no one out in he bottom of the ninth, senior David Early (Fairland, Ind./Triton Central) protected a two-run lead by striking out the side to earn the tough save. Travis Capps (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) finished with three hits and three runs while Keegar had a pair of doubles and three driven in.
UIndy plays another single game with USI tomorrow starting at 2 p.m.
