Lewis Wins Shootout at Aguila

LAVEEN, Ariz. - The Lewis men's golf team started their spring 2010 slate in style by winning The Shootout at Aguila played at the Aguila Golf Club on Friday and Saturday. Junior Casey Pyne (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) took first overall (69-70=139) while sophomore Nick Quagliano (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) finished second (72-69=141). Play on the women's side was halted due to darkness and will be resumed on Sunday.

Lewis (289-290=579) bested Drury (295-291=586) for first place among seven schools.

"Casey continues to shine," head coach Skip Steffey said. "He led the team to another victory with his stellar play due to his preparation and work ethic. Nick stepped up to fulfill the promise he has always had with a great performance to help the team seal the win."

Senior Paul Dagys (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) totaled a 148 with a pair of 74s. Junior John Whiting (Bloomfield Hills, Mi./Detroit Country Day) used a 76 and 73 to finish with a 149.

"Paul and John both had solid performances," Steffey said.

Junior Logan Watts (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) fired a 74-77=151. Senior Peter Tanaka (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) finished with a 77-79=156. Freshman Mark Bermele (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) totaled a 77=80=157. Freshman Brandon White (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) shot an 89-82=171.

"It's a great way to start the season for both the team and finishing two individuals in the top five," Steffey added.

Lewis is off until March 22nd at the Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Ala.
