Box Game 1 | Box Game 2
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The UIndy baseball team cruised to two easy wins at Greyhound Park Friday, downing visiting Wisconsin-Parkside 13-3 and 13-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Junior hurler Donovan Drake (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland) earned the win in game two, allowing just one run in six innings pitched.
GAME 1
Though the game was scheduled to go nine innings, the Hounds 10-run ruled the Rangers, earning the 13-3 win in just seven frames. Up 12-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Hounds received a walk-off hit, of sorts, from Chase Kittinger (Carmi, Ill./Carmi White County), whose RBI single put UIndy up 10 to enact the mercy rule.
UIndy scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings, jumping out to an 11-run lead before UWP got on the board. The Greyhounds racked up seven extra-base hits in that span, including a triple from Aryn Ross (Shelbyville, Ind./Hauser).
Starter Cory Rupert (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) kept the Rangers' bats quiet until the sixth. He surrendered just one hit through the first five innings before the visitors finally broke through with two runs in the sixth. Rupert finished with a line of five-plus innings pitched, two hits, five walks and four strikeouts to up his record to 6-3 on the year.
GAME 2
The Rangers got on the board first in the second game, pushing across a single run in the top of the first. The lead didn’t last long, however, as UIndy answered with four runs in both the second and third frames to take control.
After allowing the first-inning tally, UIndy starter Donovan Drake began the third by giving up a walk and a single to put two on with nobody out. The junior managed to escape unscathed, however, as a failed sacrifice and back-to-back strikeouts killed the potential rally before it got started. Drake recorded two Ks in the second, third, and sixth innings to finish with seven in all. He tossed six innings of three-hit ball to move to 5-4 in his first season at UIndy.
Junior Kaleb Cunningham (Knaps Station, N.Y./Stockton), who picked up three hits in game one, went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate in the capper. He had six ribbies, four runs scored and two stolen bases on the day.
Senior Chris Ulrey (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) recorded a triple and a two-run homer in game two while Danny Collier (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) scored three times.
UIndy concludes its conference schedule with another doubleheader versus Parkside tomorrow. First pitch from Greyhound Park is tentatively set for noon, though potential rain could alter the plan. Check here for schedule changes as soon as they are known.
