Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -Junior Dustin Esker (Red Bud, Ill.) tallied his first hit of the game in the eighth inning, a three-run shot over the left field fence, to put Maryville ahead 13-12 over non-conference opponent, Washington University of St. Louis Thursday.

This would remain the final score as the Saints did not allow a baserunner past second in the top of the ninth to pick up their tenth win of the year.

Maryville took the early 1-0 lead in the first as freshman Colby White (Festus, Mo.) crossed the plate on senior Chris Stenzel's (Red Bud, Ill.) single to centerfield.

The Bears evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the second before plating two runs in the third to pull ahead 3-1.

WashU tallied four runs on three hits in the fifth to make the score 7-1 before the Saints plated three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to cut the margin to three.

The Bears pulled ahead once more in the sixth as they tallied five runs to take the 12-4 lead.

Maryville made it 12-8 in the bottom of the frame as it scored four runs on five hits, including a two-run double by junior Eric Gruenewald (Bonduel, Wis.).

After being sent down in order in the seventh, the Saints regained the lead in the eighth as leadoff hitter, freshman Nick Little (Columbia, Mo.), drew a walk. White singled to advance Little to second and junior Mitch Seward (St. Louis) was also walked to make the bases loaded with nobody out.

Stenzel hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Little and Gruenewald recorded his fourth hit of the night to load the bases with one out.

All baserunners advanced on a wild pitch, including White from third base to make the score 12-10.

Esker then slugged his fifth roundtripper of the season to give Maryville the 13-12 lead.

Junior Cameron Dyer (Wildwood, Mo.) picked up his first career win on the mound and struck out a career-best four batters in the outing.
With the win, the Saints also snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Bears which dated back to April 1, 2003.

Maryville returns to the field Saturday when it hosts Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opponent, Rockhurst University, in the first doubleheader of the weekend series. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Weber Field due to Maryville's commencement earlier that day.
