QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team extended their winning streak to 12 games in a doubleheader sweep at home over Saint Joseph's College as Torie Bunzell recorded her first career perfect game in the team's 9-0 win in game one.
After Bunzell sat the first three Saint Joseph's hitters down in order, including striking out the final two, to start the game the Lady Hawks quickly got on the board in the bottom half of the first. Melissa Sommerfeld picked up a one out single and scored on a RBI double by Erin Gregory. The Lady Hawks added another run when Ashleigh Roscetti singled up the middle to score pinch runner Katelyn Blanas.
Quincy hit the first of what would be five home runs on the day with a solo shot by Carla Passini in the second inning to make the score 3-0 in favor of Quincy. The Lady Hawks tacked on another run in the third when Roscetti hit her second home run of the season to make the score 4-0. Meanwhile Bunzell continued to breeze past the Pumas hitters, striking out eight consecutive batters from the third until the second out of the fifth inning.
The Lady Hawks ended the game with a five run inning in the bottom of the fifth as all five batters in the inning reached base. Whitney Kroeger started the frame with a single and was followed by a walk to Sommerfeld. Gregory then ripped her team leading 8th home run of the season to center field, a three-run shot, to make the score 7-0. Roscetti drew a walk and the game ended when Megan Corey hit her third home run in as many series and fourth of the season to make the score 9-0.
Bunzell finished the game going five innings and allowing no base runners while striking out 11. It marks her first career perfect game and her fifth career no-hitter. Gregory and Roscetti each finished the game with two hits while Gregory added four runs batted in.
Bunzell took the rubber in game two as well and limited the GLVC's top hitting team to just three hits during the game. Quincy gave Bunzell the lead in the second with a two run home run by Tiffany Brakeville that was just long enough to clear the fence. Bunzell got out of a jam in the fourth inning when she struck out Stephanie Hash to leave runners stranded at first and second.
Lauren Francis came on in the fifth inning to record her first career save, going three innings and allowing one run on one hit while striking out six. The Pumas got on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run but Quincy got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double by Roscetti that scored pinch runner Mary Militello. Gregory added another two hit game in game two as Quincy out hit Saint Joseph's 5-4 in the contest. Bunzell picked up her 12th win of the season, giving her 51 in her three years.
Quincy improves to 20-7 overall and 10-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They will take their 12 game winning streak into this weekend when they host a pair of GLVC double headers when they face Drury University on Saturday and Missouri S&T on Sunday.
