ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Rockhurst Hawks held on to defeat Maryville 8-6 on Monday to clinch a spot in this week's Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Rockhurst, 28-23 and 14-15 in the GLVC, assured a third-place finish in the GLVC West Division. The Hawks will open the GLVC Tournament at noon Thursday against Indianapolis in Sauget, Ill.
Ben Baker homered for the second day in a row to power the Hawks in the first game of a doubleheader. The junior right fielder added a run-scoring double in a four-run fifth.
Tom Stevison collected three hits and two RBIs. Brandon Tangney added two hits and three runs scored.
Alex Seier got the last four outs of the game, including striking out the side in the seventh, to pick up his first save of the season. Mark Sappington pitched the first five innings to even his record at 4-4.
On Sunday, Baker drove in three runs to lead Rockhurst to a 6-3 win at Maryville in the first game of a doubleheader.
Baker drove in his first run with a groundout in the fourth and added a run-scoring double in the sixth. He capped the scoring by hitting his ninth home run to lead off the eighth.
Mark Himmelberg went the distance to win his seventh game of the season. He held the Saints to six hits while walking three and striking out three.
In the second game, Baker singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth on the way to a 4-1 win over Maryville.
Ryan Porter collected two hits, including an RBI double, to up his batting average to .405. Jeremy Pope pitched a complete game to move his record to 3-2.
Hawks fall to Washburn, 7-5
In their final home game of the season, the Rockhurst Hawks suffered a 7-5 loss to Washburn Tuesday night at Loyola Park.
Rockhurst rallied in the ninth inning for two runs and ended the game with the tying run at first base.
Chad Hatcher and Patrick Chandler both drove home runs in the ninth and finished with two hits. Austin Greer also posted two hits.
Porter powers Hawks past Missouri-St. Louis
Ryan Porter smashed a walk-off three-run home run to power Rockhurst to a 4-2 victory over Missouri-St. Louis in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday at RU's Loyola Park.
Porter's shot over the right-field fence rallied the Hawks from a 2-1 deficit in the eighth inning. Porter leads the Hawks with nine homers and 47 RBIs.
Nick Lichtenberger threw one inning in relief to pick up his second win of the season. Eric Humes held UMSL scoreless over the first 5.2 innings.
In the second game, Rockhurst outhit the Tritons 14-11 but were outscored 11-3. UMSL scored six runs in the sixth. Chad Hatcher led the Hawks with three hits.
On Sunday, UMSL held Rockhurst to five hits in pulling out a 2-1 win over the Hawks to complete a sweep of a doubleheader at Loyola Park.
The Tritons broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out RBI double in the seventh. Rockhurst's Drew Daubman earlier tied the score with a run-scoring single in the fifth. Mark Himmelberg only allowed six hits as his record fell to 6-3.
In the first game, UMSL rallied to outscore the Hawks 13-10. The Tritons scored three runs in the fifth to even the score at 9-9 and added three more runs in the seventh.
Porter hit a grand slam to give Rockhurst a 9-6 lead in the fourth. Porter's shot over the right-field fence was his eighth homer of the season. Mike Walczuk also connected on his eighth homer in the third, a two-run shot to left.
Rockhurst, 25-22, is tied for fourth in the GLVC West Division with a 11-15 record. The Hawks host Washburn on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
